Development of sensitivity to tone correlates by learners of Mandarin

چکیده
This study examined how Vietnamese learners of Mandarin who varied in their learning experience perceived synthesized Mandarin tones. We aimed to assess whether and how learners’ sensitivity to tonal correlates is commensurate with their knowledge and experience in the target language. 60 Vietnamese learners of Mandarin in Hanoi, and native speakers of Mandarin, were recruited to participate in tone identification tasks. As expected, Mandarin speakers scored the highest among all groups of listeners. More advanced Vietnamese listeners performed better than inexperienced ones and the response patterns were resemble to the native Mandarin speakers. Results also suggest that experience in Mandarin interacted significantly with certain tonal correlate.

Attention redistribution and segment-tone integration in Mandarin tone acquisition by L2 learners
This study investigates how beginning and advanced Dutch learners of Mandarin process Mandarin tonal information. An ABX matching to sample task is adopted to investigate the discrimination of tonal pairs, the redistribution of attention between segmental and suprasegmental information, and the integrality of segmental and suprasegmental dimensions. Results show a clear developmental path in to...
متن کاملLimits on Monolingualism? A Comparison of Monolingual and Bilingual Infants’ Abilities to Integrate Lexical Tone in Novel Word Learning
To construct their first lexicon, infants must determine the relationship between native phonological variation and the meanings of words. This process is arguably more complex for bilingual learners who are often confronted with phonological conflict: phonological variation that is lexically relevant in one language may be lexically irrelevant in the other. In a series of four experiments, the...
متن کاملThe Perception of Lexical Tones and Tone Sandhi in L2: Success or Failure?
In the current study, we explore the issues of the acquisition of lexical tones and the acquisition of tonal phonological rules by means of categorical perception experiments with advanced L2 learners of Mandarin whose native language is Dutch. By comparing their performance with native Mandarin listeners and native Dutch listeners, we found that advanced L2 learners may build up native-like re...
متن کاملError patterns of Mandarin disyllabic tones by Japanese learners
Previous studies on Mandarin tone production indicate that there is no agreement on which tones are most difficult for L2 learners. Much of previous research on L2 learning of Mandarin tones has focused on monosyllables. In modern Mandarin, however, it is disyllabic words that dominate the vocabulary. This research investigates the production of Mandarin disyllabic tones by Japanese learners. I...
متن کاملIndividual variability in the distributional learning of L2 lexical tone
This study tested whether successful learners of an artificial tone language exhibit sensitivity to varying degrees of tonal informativeness, which has previously been shown to effect spoken word recognition in native Mandarin speakers. Twenty naïve listeners, whose L1 is American English, learned an artificial language in which each visual nonce symbol was arbitrarily associated with a Mandari...
